Eid Al-Adhha - The sacrifice of the Lamb

Eid Al-Adhha marks the anniversary of Abraham's attempt to sacrifice his son Ishmael on God's orders. People celebrate this dates with a "feast of sacrifice".
Many people, especially in poor neighbourhoods, cannot afford to buy a lamb, but borrow money from their relatives or friends to buy it. Most of the meat is shared with family and neighbours, but one-third is given to the poor. During these dates it is common to see men na dlambs sharing any mean of transport.

Notting Hill Carnival 2006

London Thai Festival at Battersea Park

Despite the rain a colourful day of Thai culture took place in Battersea Park. Londoners enjoyed the taste of Thai dishes, dance, music, hand-crafted ornaments and curiosities. This year’s event commemorates the 60th Anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand's accession to the throne. See pictures


Palestine Campaign: Candlelit Vigil

World Naked Bike Ride 2006

10th of June 2006 - Camberwell, London
World Naked Bike Ride 2006, cyclists and skaters participated in the third worldwide naked ride/skate protest against oil dependency. Police were fully aware that most of the riders were going to be nude and partially nude as they cycled a route through the streets of central London. The event kicked off with a Body painting session at Wellington Arch. See Pictures



Bonkersfest: Hitting Normality where it hurts. Camberwell Festival

3rd of June 2006 - Camberwell, London
The festival was inaugurated by the Mayor of Southwark and the Southwark Town Crier with a cannon firing bananas. DJs, bands, artists, performers and dancers amused the crowds. The event was organised by Creative Routes, a charity ran by people who have experience of the mental health system. The organisation aim is to promote healthier happier lives through successful and innovative arts projects and collaborations. See Pictures

The Sultan’s Elephant arrived to London.

5th of May 2006 - London
The 4 days spectacle took place in the streets and public spaces of Westminster. Created by theatrical company Royal de Luxe, it tells the story of a sultan from far-off lands and his magical, time-travelling mechanical elephant. The Sultan’s Elephant is forty feet high and weights 42 tonnes. See Pictures



Mayday Protests in Trafalgar Sq
& the Bank of England

1st of May 2006 - London
The main protests took place in Trafalgar Square. There were also a group of young protesters that organised a demostration in The Bank of England. The youngters dressed as Police officers in what they announced as "Police Mayday Victory". See Pictures



London Animal Rights Demonstration

28th April 2006 - London
The demonstration started at 11:45 from Finsbury Square. The route was through Bishopsgate, Aldgate, Minories and end up at American Square in front of the Huntigdon Life Sciences building. According to the police they were 80 - 100 animal rights demonstrators, who were escorted by the police throughout their march. See Pictures



Murder in Oval

27th April 2006- London
A petrol bomb was thrown against an off-license, causing one dead and two very seriously injured men. The suspect is a black man. The London Metropolitan Police is carrying out a thorough investigation, asking all the neighbourhood and recollecting all CCTV tapes from the local shops. The police is asking for any witnesses to come forward. See Pictures



Flora London Marathon

23rd April 2006- London
A 26-mile (42km) route with more than 40,000 entrants for one of the worlds largest Marathon. Many of the entrants enter to raise money for charities. The participants include international athletes, disabled people, celebrities, and people in fancy dress. See Pictures



Shakespeare’s Birthday at the Globe Theatre
Cleopatra on the Thames

23rd April 2006- London
Events for Shakespeare’s birthday began with Cleopatra sailing on a row boat along the river Thames, protected by London Metropolitan Police Marine Support Unit. The event took place in the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre on a rainy St George day. The visitors enjoyed free entrance and among other activities gladiatorial fighting, dressing as Cleopatra, toga dressing, performing competitions and workshops. See Pictures
